Sprint 15 Fleet
About the Fleet
The Sprint 15 is the biggest catamaran class at Carsington sailing club and in recent years we have managed to grow the fleet from eight boats in 1998 to our current position of twenty five. About half the fleet sail the Sprint 15 for pleasure with their family, whilst the other half regularly take part in club racing with around half a dozen or so who venture away from Carsington to race at national level. The Sprint 15 can be raced in two formats Sprint “Sport” main sail / jib & trapeze or “Una-Rig” main sail only. At Carsington the preference of most racing helms is to sail Sprint “Sport” but this is not exclusive.
We are a very friendly fleet with a wide range of abilities, if you are thinking of purchasing a Sprint 15 but not quite sure if catamarans are for you, then give us a call we have several RYA Catamaran Instructors who will be only too willing to take you out for a demonstration ride and answer any questions you may wish to raise.
Carsington sailing club has for many years had the honour to host the penultimate round of the Sprint 15 Summer TT meeting which attracts a big fleet of Sprint 15s from many clubs around the country, we also host the second of five one day Winter TT always held first Saturday in December.
The Sprint 15 Fleet Captain is Ray Gall, boat ID 1914 “YaHoo!” who is also the Sprint 15 Association Northern Representative, Ray is also the “godfather” of the DX 15 square top sail which he has developed and is currently racing with special permission from CSC to produce a Portsmouth Yardstick in association with the RYA. The DX can only be purchased through Steve Sawford at www.speedysports.co.uk. Another influential mover in the Sprint 15 world and local sailor is George Love editor of the fabulous Sprint 15 magazine called NewSprint, George is also an active and keen racer and can often be seen out on the national circuit sailing his boat 1825 “Fly–by–Wire”.
Fleet Members:
We would like to welcome newcomers to the CSC Sprint 15 fleet Alex Glenn, Chris Hodges and Bryn Williams we wish them well and extend the offer of any assistance / rigging /coaching / boat maintenance etc that they may require.
About the Sprint 15
The Sprint 15 is the UKs biggest and most active single handed catamaran class and has been for many years, the boat design is more than thirty years old but despite this remains popular as it is very versatile. The Sprint 15 is a genuine single hander, it is car top-able and can be put together within 90 minutes, or transported on a trailer and ready to sail within 30 minutes. It is easily righted from a capsize by one person and can be sailed all year round.
Training
Sprint 15 training at Carsington can be arranged through Ray who along with George Love and Robin Newbold are RYA Catamaran Instructors and key members of the Sprint 15 fleet. Ray organizes a two day annual training session at Carsington for those who wish to improve their seamanship skills and help introduce novices to racing, training is also organized nationally through the Sprint 15 Association and in 2010 the two day training course run by Brian Phipps is planned to be held at Grafham Water Sailing Club on 22nd 23rd May.
Sprint 15 Association
The class association has over 320 members and runs many events through the summer and winter. The class is unique in that it runs two National Championships each year one for Sprint “Sport” the other for “Una-Rig” the latter generally incorporates a three day fun / cruising event for all members of the family into the sailing programme.
The class is very proud of its web site which is generally reckoned to be one of the best web sites in the sailing scene (give it a look on www.Sprint15.com). This is full of useful tips and guidance and has a very active chat line. The class magazine “NewSprint” comes out three times a year and is equally informative and friendly. The association membership fees are just £10:00/year by standing order and £15:00/year by cheque.
