Club Open Day a Great Succes

We were favoured with a warm dry day with a reasonable wind for our annual open day on Bank holiday Saturday. Throughout the day there was a continuous stream of visitors most of whom had never been in a boat before.

The general comments when they came off the water were:
“that was fantastic, I really would like to do more”

Many then went on to try other classes of boat which ranged from Optimists to Wayfarers, Cats., Dayboats and Cruisers, all manned by Club members who willingly gave up their time to introduce more people to sailing.

During the day we took in excess of 200 visitors for a sail, many of these, will I am sure return to learn to sail and hopefully join the Club.

Thanks to all those members who worked all day both on and off the water to make the day a great success.
The following is the day as seen by a visitor, James has just completed his Level 2 course which had been a birthday present from his dad Roy.

My son, James, and I went along to Carsington Sailing Club’s Open Day on Bank Holiday Saturday. It was really informative. We were firstly taken out on the water on one of the Club’s many Comet Dinghies with an instructor who told us how to operate the Jib and Main Sails, centreboard and rudder and gave us sailing commands such as ‘ready about’ and ‘lee ho’.
We were then taken out on a Wayfarer Dinghy, with another member. He personally owned this boat, named ‘Hot Chocolate’ and by the end of this session we had started to get the bug for sailing.
Finally, we were taken out by his daughter, Hannah, on a 16 foot Dart Catamaran.  James put a harness on and went on the ‘trapeze’. The open day was very popular but most attendees were not wearing wet suits. This was fine in the Comet and Wayfarer. I had hired one for the day and it was the right decision! When the catamaran sped through the water rapidly the spray came over the boat. Hannah instructed  James how to go out on the trapeze at the side of the boat to counterbalance it, whilst I operated the Jib sail and Hannah steered the boat and operated the main sail.

We loved it and James has booked further lessons commencing on 21st June.

All the people we met at the club are really friendly and made us welcome and the lunch in the clubhouse was excellent and reasonably priced.
